Damien Hirst Returns With 100 Piece Exhibition in Venice

The legendary British artist is back with a vast 100 piece exhibition entitled ‘Treasures From The Wreck Of The Unbelievable’; this project is the first time that both Pinault Foundation venues – the Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana – have been dedicated entirely to one artist.

Taking nearly a decade to complete, Hirst draws inspiration from myths, fantasy, history and his own wild imagination to construct the fictitious narrative of the salvaged ‘Apistos’. According to the exhibition, the ’unbelievable’ ship and its treasures, belonging to Cif Amotan II- a mid-first and early-second century freed slave and art collector – were salvaged in 2008. A vast array of works are on show, including coral-encrusted sculptures, helmets, swords, gold jewellery, and “historical artefacts” to name a few.
