At this year’s CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) fashion awards, Barbie will become the first ever doll or non-living thing to receive the Board of Directors’ Tribute award. After some great personalities like Michelle Obama, Tom Ford and Janelle Monáe, who won the award in the previous years, the world’s most famous doll is next.

The Mattel’s iconic toy has been one of the most influential and important figures in the fashion industry for the past six decades. That is right, Barbie is turning 60 this year.

Since its creation, the doll has collaborated with more than 75 designers and a lot of Barbies have been made to look like celebrities like Karl Lagerfeld, Diana Ross, Gigi Hadid, just to name a few. Jermey Scott even launched an entire Moschino collection based on her.

There is no confirmation of who will be receiving the award on Barbie’s behalf. It is a tremendous honour for Barbie to be recognised by the CFDA board of directors for her contributions to American fashion, Richard Dickson, the president and chief operating officer of Mattel, said, on her behalf.

In addition to it, Steven Kolb, President and CEO of the CFDA said in a statement that “her story [Barbie’s] personally resonates with so many CFDA members that the Board of Directors decided to honour her with the special tribute.”

The CFDA fashion awards will take place on June 3 at the Brooklyn Museum.
