More than the new physique he’s honed for If You Wish Upon Me, the surprisingly pensive actor speaks to Zaneta Cheng about why he believes in the human propensity to do good, and how to derive and give comfort through his work

Ji Chang Wook is brawny. He’s been training for his new television series If You Wish Upon Me, and has the shoulders and physique to show for it. The workouts have brought about an even more chiselled jaw and an even trimmer face so that the actor can more closely embody the troubled mien of his latest character.

Starring as Yoon Gyeo Rae, the 34-year-old Korean star plays a broken man whose past includes growing up in an orphanage in a bid to escape an abusive father to stints in juvenile detention and prison. The character starts off with hardly a will to live. “The story begins when Yoon Gyeo Rae is released from prison and follows him as he begins doing community service at a hospice,” Ji tells us from the set of our cover shoot. “It’s a story about opening up and how Yoon Gyeo Rae’s view of the world gradually changes with every interaction that he has with Team Genie. It’s a heartful show even though much of the plot revolves around death. It’s brighter and more cheerful than expected. The relationship between the characters is also interesting and I enjoyed acting on this set.”

Since completing his military service in 2019, Ji has slowly gravitated towards more considered, deeper and more human roles. After making his film debut in the 2006 film Days and his first television debut with a minor role in You Stole My Heart, he rose to national attention with his first lead role in Smile Again, a daily soap, and broke through as a national heartthrob in his role as Emperor Toghon Temür, in the period television show Empress Ki.

His filmography has since been filled with action-thriller pieces such as Healer (2014) alongside Rachel Park, The K2 (2016) and Fabricated City (2017). Multifaceted, Ji seems to be able to do no wrong balancing both intense action characters with romantic comedies – his popularity soared and when he was discharged from military service a few years later, the actor was welcomed back with open arms by eager fans across Asia.

After starring in two romantic comedies and a thriller since his discharge, the roles Ji has taken to show in 2022 – Netflix series The Sound of Magic and upcoming drama If You Wish Upon Me – show a different side of the actor. And there’s a reason for this. “There was a period when I was very interested in humanism,” Ji says. “I wanted to be comforted by the characters while acting these characters. Both works have helped to comfort me.”

For those unclear about the concept of humanism, it’s a philosophical position that believes in the social and individual potential of human beings. That, rather than fate and destiny, concepts that premise many Korean television dramas, human beings have the agency to change and promote their lives and the lives of those around them as well as decide what values they decide to adopt.

“I want people who see my work to be comforted, even if it’s just a little bit, in the way the characters gave me comfort,” says Ji. There aren’t many similarities between Ji and his new character Yoon Gyeo Rae but in the same way that Ji chose to play magician Ri-eul in The Sound of Magic for the character’s childlike innocence and honesty as a way to relieve those with burdened with adult responsibilities, he chose to play Yoon Gyeo Rae in If You Wish Upon Me as a way to encourage the hopeless and the helpless.

“When you think of Yoon Gyeo Rae, his pessimism comes to mind. I think there is a varying degree of pessimism in everyone, so I took the time to find that part in me,” Ji says. “I went through the process of searching, thinking and understanding the character of Yoon Gyeo Rae and amplifying those parts in me that are in line with him. Feeling lonely and loving someone are feelings essential to all humanity. Gyeo Rae might seem like a person who doesn’t see the point of living, but he really wants to live more than anybody else. There aren’t very many similarities between us but these thoughts on life being essential are similar, I guess.”

Ji is an actor who chooses his scripts for characters and plot elements that interest him based on how he’s feeling at the moment, “[which] changes depending on the situation I’m in when reading the script and it’s important for me to work on something I can express well”. And the methods Ji, who can sing and act both in theatre and on screen, uses to get into character also change.

“It seems to change all the time for me. The process I use to interpret characters is different for every project. The people I work with also changes, so I change accordingly,” he says. “There were times when I completely followed the direction I was given and there were times when I took the lead in interpreting the character. When I look at my work, it seems that the weight I give to the way my current situation is and how my emotions are at that point in time has increased compared to before. Over time, though, this may change again.”

Admitting to crying with his fellow actors at the final shoot for If You Wish Upon Me, Ji seems to be unreservedly in touch with himself and who he is. “Such memories leave a lot of happy memories as a colleague and as a junior actor. There is joy in meeting new seniors and colleagues. They’re such great people and I enjoyed filming more than ever,” he says. “I remember scenes where people were leaving from an episode. Rather than being greatly influenced by such scenes, it remains a very warm memory. Maybe that kind of warmth will have a good effect on me as a result.”

In his answers, Ji’s persistence in finding the beauty and light in every endeavour glimmers through. But how does a steadfast, seemingly buoyant personality handle the inevitable ups and downs that come hand in hand with an artistic career in the spotlight? “It’s difficult when I feel like I have the confidence to do everything and I come up against something that I might not be able to do. It’s not easy to overcome the feeling of loss when facing one’s limitations,” Ji confesses. “Nevertheless, I’ve been helped by many colleagues and friends and I was also comforted by my fans who have always supported me.”

It’s possible that the way Ji finds comfort in his work is that it keeps him going. “Fortunately, I have no intention of taking a break from work,” he says cheerfully. “When I meet new people or am offered new work, I have a strong desire to do it.” Be it a musical on television, a television series, movie or even a YouTube shoot, Ji is widely reported to be a dream to work with on set, giving his input and going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the work is the best it can be.

“I don’t think I ever get too tired to work. If you feel tired at any point, you can take a break in between. I tend to rest well between work,” he says. “I spend quality time with my mother, who is someone who has helped me a lot in love, who gave me a lot of motivation – she’s my #legend. I also spend time with my friends and for myself. When I get this time, I can work with a refreshed mind when I begin working on a new project.”

And new projects for Ji, there seem to be aplenty. With If You Wish Upon Me broadcasting on August 10 and a variety show spot to come in September, there’s much for Ji’s fans to anticipate – and Ji shares in the excitement. “Isn’t something one wants to achieve as an actor to see viewers and audiences having fun watching my work?” he asks. “I think there will be a new side of me that I don’t even know about yet, so I hope everyone will look forward to that with me in the future.”

새 드라마 당신이 소원을 말하면에 예고된 짙은 남성미, 그 이상의 배우인 지창욱은 자네타청에게 그가 지향하는 인간의 선행 그리고 작품을 통해 그가 독자들에게 전하고자 하는 위로에 대해 이야기 합니다.

배우 지창욱은 매 작품마다 새로운 캐릭터를 연기하기 위해 강렬하고 남성미 넘치는 변신을 합니다. 새 드라마 당신이 소원을 말하면 에서도 역시 그의 꾸준한 관리를 통해 얻은 날렵한 턱선 그리고 넓은 어깨는 삶에 대한 의욕과 의지가 없이 간신히 인생을 버텨내고 있는 윤겨레의 아픔을 잘 비유하고 있습니다.

34살의 배우 지창욱은 아버지의 학대로부터 벗어나기 위해 스스로 보육원으로 가야했던 ‘고장난 어린아이’ 캐릭터 윤겨레를 연기합니다.  “드라마는 삐뚤어진 시선으로 세상을 바라보는 윤겨레라는 인물이 교도소에서 출소를 하고 호스피스 병원으로 사회봉사를 가면서 벌어지는 이야기에요.” 라고 배우 지창욱은 설명합니다. “비록 죽음을 소재로 한 드라마지만, 삶에 대한 비관적인 관점을 가지고 있던 윤겨레가 팀 지니를 만나게 되면서 서로 소통하고 세상을 바라보는 시선도 조금씩 바뀌어 가는 이야기가 담겨있어요. 매우 밝고 경쾌한 작품이라고 할 수 있죠. 인물들간의 관계도 매우 흥미롭고, 현장에서 즐겁게 연기를 했어요.”

2019년에 군복무를 마친 이후, 배우 지창욱은 이전보다 감정선이 깊고 조금 더 성숙한 인간적인 배역을 연기하고 싶다고 이야기합니다. 그는 2006년 영화 ‘데이즈’ 로 통해 첫 데뷔한 후 드라마 ‘넌 내게 반했어’의 단역을 맡게 됩니다. 그리고 그는 첫 주연작인 주말연속극 ‘웃어라 동해야’ 로 모두에게 얼굴을 알립니다. 그의 연기적 흥행은 사극 ‘무사 백동수’와 ‘기황후’의 주연으로 이어졌습니다.

이후 그의 필모그래피는 배우 박민영과 함께한 ‘힐러’, 그리고 ‘The K2’, ‘조작된 도시’ 와 같은 다양한 액션 스릴러 작품으로 채워졌습니다. 대체불가한 배우 지창욱은 몸을 아끼지 않는 액션과 달콤한 로맨틱 코미디 역시 완벽히 소화해냈습니다 – 그리고 그는 아시아 전역의 열렬한 팬들의 환호를 받으면 2019년 제대를 전역을 하였습니다.

군 제대이후 로맨틱 코미디와 스릴러 작품에서 최고의 연기를 보여준 배우 지창욱은 2022년 넷플릭스의 로맨스 판타지 드라마 ‘안나라수마나라’와 이번 달 새로 방영하는 당신이 소원을 말하면에 합류하며 지금까지 도전해 본적 없는 새로운 캐릭터로 변신을 합니다. 이러한 도전에는 이유가 있다고 배우는 말합니다. “빠져있다고 표현할 정도는 아니지만 휴머니즘에 관심이 컸던 기간이 있었어요. 작품 속 인물을 연기하면서 나도 위로 받고 싶었던 점도 있었고요. 두 작품 모두 나에게 도움이 되고 위안이 되었던 작품이에요.”

휴머니즘이란 인간의 사회적 그리고 개인의 잠재력을 믿는 철학적인 입장을 칭합니다. 많은 한국 드라마들이 전제로 하는 “운명과 삶”의 떼어 낼 수 없는 개념과는 조금 다르게, 휴머니즘은 개인이 자신의 삶과 주변인들의 삶을 변화시킬 수 있는 가능성을 표현합니다.

“제 작품을 보는 분들이 제가 작품에서 느꼈던 것처럼 조금이라도 위안을 받았으면 하는 바램이 있어요.” 배우 지창욱은 배역이 자신과 시청자들에게 전달해주는 안정감에 따라 작품을 선정한다고 말합니다. 새 배역 윤겨레와 그는 닮은 점이 많지 않지만, 절망적이고 무력한 삶을 살아가는 사람들에게 격려의 메세지를 전달하기 위해 윤겨레를 연기하기로 결심했다고 설명합니다. 앞서 연기했던 드라마 ‘안나라수마나라’ 속 캐릭터 이을 역시 수 많은 책임 아래 방황을 하고 있는 아이들을 마법이라는 안정감으로 이끄는 멋있는 면모에 끌렸다고 합니다.

배우 지창욱은 배역 윤겨레에 대해 설명합니다. “윤겨레라는 캐릭터를 생각했을 때 가장 큰 부분은 염세적인 부분이라고 생각해요. 정도의 차이가 있겠지만 누구나 그런 부분을 가지고 있을 거라고 생각이 들고요. 그래서 그런 부분을 찾고, 생각하고 또 윤겨레라는 인물을 이해하고, 그 부분들을 극대화 시키는 과정들을 거쳤어요. 사실 작품에서 비춰지는 겨레는 삶에 대한 의지가 없어 보이지만, 사실은 그 누구보다 삶에 대한 열정을 가지고 있는 사람인 거 같아요. 특히 겨레가 외로움을 느끼고 누군가를 사랑하는 감정을 느끼는 건 인간의 본질적인 감정이라고 생각하구요. 저와는 닮은 점이 크게 없지만, 이러한 본질적인 삶에 대한 마음이 비슷하다고 할 수 있을 거 같아요.”

더 나아가 그는 그때의 감정 역시 작품을 선정하는 데에 큰 비중을 차지한다고 말합니다, “대본이 재미있는지, 캐릭터가 매력적인가 하는 요소를 보편적으로 봐요. 이런 요소는 글을 읽을 때 제 상황에 따라 다가오는 지점이 달라져요. 제가 잘 표현할 수 있는 것, 즐겁게 작업할 수 있는 부분을 중요시 하는 것 같아요.”

그의 캐릭터 접근방식 역시 그때의 배역과 작품에 따라 조정한다고 이야기합니다. “딱 한가지로 정의할 수 없을 것 같아요. 캐릭터를 해석하는 과정들은 매작품에 따라 달라져요. 같이 작업하는 사람들이 달라기지 때문에 거기에 맞춰서 많이 달라진다고 할 수 있을 거 같아요. 때로는 온전히 주어진 연출을 따라가면서 표현하기도 했고, 또 때로는 제가 주도적으로 캐릭터를 표현할 때도 있었어요. 최근 작품들을 살펴보면, 제가 현재 놓여있는 상황 그리고 그때의 감정을 고려해서 작품들을 선정하는 비중이 커진 것 같아요. 물론 시간이 지나면서 바뀔 수도 있지만요”

당신이 소원을 말하면 촬영을 끝 맞추며 시원섭섭했던 그의 감정을 표현하며 그는 동료배우들에 향한 남다른 애정을 드러냅니다. “후배로서 동료로서 다른 배우들과 함께 촬영하는 건 항상 행복한 기억으로 많이 남아요. 새로운 선배와 동료를 만나게 된 기쁨도 있었고, 워낙 좋으신 분들이라 어느 때보다 즐겁게 촬영을 했던거 같아요.” 이에 더해 배우 지창욱은 드라마 속 사람들과 이별하는 에피소드들을 스스로에게 영향을 미친 장면으로 뽑습니다. “에피소드에 나오는 사람들을 떠내보내는 장면들이 정말 기억에 남아요. 그런 장면들로 엄청 큰 영향을 받았기 보다는 굉장한 따뜻한 기억으로 남아있다고 생각해요. 그런 따듯함이 결국 나에게 좋은 영향을 미치지 않을까요?”

연기 생활에 있어 확고하고 자신만의 신념을 지닌 배우 지창욱은 그의 필모그래피의 한계와 어려움에 대해 들려줍니다. ““모든 걸 다 할 수 있을 것 같은 자신감으로 작업을 이어가다가, ‘내가 못할 수도 있지 않을까?’ 라는 생각이 들 때 한계를 마주하는 것 같아요. 그리고 이런 한계를 통해 끝을 마주했을 때 느껴지는 상실감을 극복하기 어려운 거 같아요.” 그는 조심스럽게 고백합니다. “이런 상황에 있어 많은 동료들, 친구들에게 도움을 받았던거 같아요. 항상 응원해주는 저의 팬분들도 마찬가지로요.”

그가 말하는 작품이 가져다 주는 안정감이 연기 생활을 계속하게 하는 원동력이라고 말할 수 있습니다. 그는 당당하게 이야기 합니다, “다행히 작품을 쉬고 싶은 생각은 없어요. 새로운 캐릭터, 작품을 만나면 하고 싶은 마음이 강해요.” 배우 지창욱은 드라마, 영화, 유튜브 등 다양한 매체에서 함께 일하고 싶은 배우로 뽑히며 그의 최고의 영향력을 보여주고 있습니다.

“다행히 일하는 것에 있어서 크게 지친다는 생각은 안 들어요. 어느 순간 지친다는 생각이 들면, 중간 중간 쉬어가면 되죠. 그런 면에 있어서 저는 작품과 작품 사이 기간 동안 잘 쉬는 편인 거 같아요.” 라고 그는 일에 대한 사랑을 표현합니다. “특히 저는 어머님과 시간을 잘 보내요. 어머님은 저에게 있어서 #legend라고 할 수 있어요. 제 인생에 많은 사랑과 도움 그리고 동기를 준 사람이기도 하죠. 또, 저는 친구들과도, 저를 위한 시간도 잘 분배하는 거 같아요. 이를 통해서 얻은 리프레시가 다음 작품에 도움이 많이 된다고 할 수 있어요.”

배우 지창욱은 그의 끊임없는 작품적 그리고 새로운 캐릭터 도전을 약속합니다. 8월10일에 첫 방영하는 당신이 소원을 말하면과 9월에 방송 예정된 버라이어티 쇼에 이어 그의 작품은 계속됩니다. “시청자들이나 관객분들이 제 작품을 보면서 즐거워하는 모습이 배우로서 성취하고 싶은 것들이 아닐까요?” 그는 웃으며 우리에게 질문합니다. “저도 모르는 저의 새로운 모습이 있을 거라고 생각하기 때문에 앞으로도 많은 기대해 주셨으면 좋겠어요!”
